Validators receive rewards for certifying and proposing blocks to the blockchain. But, if a validator performs a malicious action against the network, it is severely penalized.
Terra has three common conditions to trigger Slashing:
- Validator’s absence to sign transaction.
- Validator signs two blocks simultaneously.
- Validators missing more than 95% of the recent 1000 votes.
Also, when a validator reports misbehavior of another, the latter is "jailed" for some time. And, the network will also cut a portion of its staked $LUNA after a guilty verdict.
Real-life cases are BiTrue, DexTrac, Caronte, and 73 ones. They had been jailed.

Often, a percentage of the stake is lost. Also, they apply a total stake reduction or remove the validator from the group. This could be for the current period or forever.
This mechanism discourages malicious validator behavior. It incentivizes participation in the network, as well as node security and availability.
For all the above, Stader spreads out the risk, under staking with a pool of validators instead of one. It minimizes any penalties.
